Day Six: Rome
Our last day in Rome started off with a short wait to get into the Vatican. We split up again and followed two ladies who told us lots of details about the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica as we maneuvered the thick crowds to see some amazing art and artifacts. We imagined how much more crowded it will be next year, a Jubilee year.
We had lunch outside the Vatican and signed a postcard to send home to the Carvers with the special Vatican stamp – very fun. Then, off to the bus for a ride to the San Domatilla catacombs. It was nice a cool and interesting to learn about these pre-Constantine places of Christian burial. After dinner we took a night stroll and got to see the Jewish ghetto and boardwalk along the Tiber river, with some interesting history lessons from our local guide as well as seeing how some Romans spend their evenings. We got some great pictures of the sunset against the Italian pine trees. Then it was time to pack up and think about home.
